The Uzi is one of the most produced and most recognizable submachine guns ever built, over 10 million made, used by more than 90 countries. Designed by Major Uziel Gal in the late 1940s and adopted by the Israeli Defense Forces in 1954, its telescoping-bolt design packed a 9mm automatic into a package barely larger than a pistol with a stock. From the Negev to the Secret Service
Uziel Gal designed his submachine gun for a young nation that needed a weapon it could manufacture cheaply and field fast. His key innovation was the telescoping bolt (wrapping the bolt around the rear of the barrel) which let the Uzi stay compact without sacrificing a usable barrel length. The IDF adopted it in 1954, and it proved itself in the close-quarters fighting of the 1956 Suez campaign and the Six-Day War in 1967.
The Uzi went global from there. German border guards, Belgian forces, and dozens of other militaries adopted it, and the U.S. Secret Service famously carried Uzis for decades, the photograph of an agent producing one from a briefcase during the 1981 attempt on President Reagan's life is one of the most reproduced news images of its era.
Pop culture cemented the legend. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator made the micro version a movie star in 1984, and through the 80s and 90s the Uzi's flat-topped silhouette became visual shorthand for "serious firepower" in film, television, and music.
