La storia dell'M4 inizia con l'AR-15 di Eugene Stoner, adottato come M16 durante il Vietnam. I soldati amavano il fucile leggero ma lo volevano più corto; gli equipaggi dei carri armati, i paracadutisti e le unità per le operazioni speciali hanno guidato decenni di esperimenti con carabine, dal CAR-15 degli anni '60 fino all'XM177. Nel 1994 l'esercito americano ha standardizzato il risultato: la carabina M4, un M16 con canna da 14,5 pollici, calcio collassabile e castello flat-top pronto per le ottiche.
Poi sono arrivati due decenni di guerra in Afghanistan e Iraq, e l'M4 è diventato il fucile più fotografato al mondo. Cosa si prova a sparare con l'M4
L'M4 sembra un trucco. Con un peso di circa tre chili e il rinculo del leggero proiettile 5.56 che viaggia dritto all'indietro attraverso un calcio in linea, la volata si alza a malapena, anche in modalità automatica. La tua prima raffica colpisce l'acciaio. La tua seconda raffica colpisce l'acciaio ancora più velocemente.
Questa controllabilità è voluta: l'M4 è stato costruito affinché una recluta media di 19 anni potesse combattere efficacemente dopo l'addestramento di base.
