A short history of a rare rifle
In 2004, US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) held a competition for a new modular combat rifle. FN Herstal won with the SCAR, the Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle, in two versions: the 5.56 Light (Mk 16) and the .308 Heavy (Mk 17).
SOCOM later dropped the Mk 16 but kept the Mk 17, because its .308 round gave operators reach and stopping power a 5.56 rifle couldn't match. The Mk 17 deployed with special operations units in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the SCAR-H family also became the base for the Mk 20 sniper support rifle.
FN released the civilian SCAR 17S in 2009. Its short-stroke gas piston, folding stock and surprisingly soft recoil made it a collector favorite, but supply has always been tight and replacement parts are now hard to find. That's why we've moved it from the standard gun list to its own add-on.
